Study: Vegetarians Less Healthy Than Meat-Eaters

April 23, 2014

The Medical University of Graz in Graz, Austria made a stunning finding in a recent survey: Vegetarians are less healthy than their meat-eating counterparts!

The study, which you can read in its entirety here, found that meat-eaters have a higher BMI and a higher rate of alcohol consumption.Vegetarians also tend to have a higher socio-economic status. However, their quality of life is lower.

The researchers found that vegetarians were twice as likely to have allergies, had a 50% increase in incidences of cancer, and also had a 50% increase in heart attacks. Vegetarians also tend to have more chronic diseases and poor mental health.

Further, the study noticed that vegetarians are more prone to other bad habits, such as skipping vaccines and preventative care.

The researchers note that other studies have come out showing that vegetarians are healthier, but the researchers contend that they’re looking at different indices of health from those other studies.
It actually makes sense; right? I mean, if I had to give up steak and bacon, I’d probably be a bit crabby too! Of course, the study is a nice reminder that our animal farmers deserve a nice big THANK YOU and our appreciation. After all, they are increasing our quality of life!
So, while vegetarians may be skinnier and drink less alcohol (since when is that a good thing?), the overall quality of life and health is less for vegetarians over their meat-eating counterparts.
