Sorry HSUS, But No

August 21, 2013

While wasting time on Facebook I just happened to notice this ad on the side of my screen:

First, I think I should state the obvious: Facebook does watch what you click on, type, and say. It should probably be stuff from The Farmer’s Daughter.
(Ok, shameless self-promotion done.)
Second, is HSUS really serious? They want to reach out to farmers now? What, did they decide that destroying our livelihood was getting boring and they wanted to branch out? Or, maybe they figured if we’re a member of their radical animal rights group we’ll go ahead and listen to their ridiculous ideas about raising our animals.
If you’ve forgotten, this is who HSUS really is:
The President of HSUS has compared animal agriculture to the Nazi Holocaust. As if that isn’t offensive, now he expects us to accept his hand of friendship?
Maybe the push back from farmers is working. Maybe we’re hurting donations. Maybe HSUS realized that getting people to part with their money by showing videos of suffering dogs and cats, and then using that money to attack farmers isn’t working anymore. Maybe they now understand that eventually the truth gets out and you can’t propagate lies forever.
I certainly hope so.
And I don’t think I’m alone in saying, “screw you.” You expect us to start lauding your radical organization and boosting your donations so you can turn around and use that money against us? No way.
Conventional US farmers are humane and are sustainable. We love what we do and want to do it right. HSUS doesn’t care; they just want to shut us down. Farmers are worth celebrating, but not with the people that want to end our industry.
So, no thanks to your advertising. Sorry not sorry.

So this is ironic but google adsense placed an ad for HSUS at the bottom of your page. I found it funny after reading this post that an ad directly below it popped up in the promotion of banning individual maternity pens for hogs.

Yeah, that's obviously something I need to look into….

I love your blog! Please title your posts that attract anti-science communities. The bullshit is so deep in public media concerning genetic engineering and farming….I can't even go to a farmer's market anymore because they are now propaganda markets. I had a fella telling me that a diet of his grower/employer's organic products would cure cancer and even ALS! Can we get some punishment for people who dare to make such claims?? Argh! Talk about selling lies for profit!

Thanks, Cake Baybee! I understand your frustration — that's part of the reason I started blogging. I'm glad you enjoy the content and hope that it helps you in combating some of the deception!

The Farmer's Daughter

Green soybeans as far as the eye can see. I took this photo over the weekend. These beans should be turning yellow and drying for harvest. So why aren't they? Because...the spring drought.Seeds need water to germinate. But after we planted we didn't have rain for weeks. So those seeds just sat in the dirt and never sprouted. Then, finally, it rained. And the tiny plants started popping up.The problem? It was several weeks too late for planting. The question is whether they'll be ready to harvest before the snow flies. We have shorter seasons in Michigan, so it'll be close.

In my latest for AGDAILY I take a look at that status of plant-based "milks" and the FDA's moves on labeling.

The FDA's draft guidance on the milk label is a decent compromise on which the nutritional differences with actual milk must be clearly stated.

It’s harvest season in Michigan. Remember that even if you have to slow down to 20 mph and follow a tractor for one mile, it takes only three minutes of your time – about the same amount as waiting for one stoplight.

I visited one of my favorite local farm stands ove I visited one of my favorite local farm stands over the weekend. I thought I'd buy a couple zucchini and cantaloupe. But the zucchini looked more like clubs, and the cantaloupe was too ripe for my taste. So I passed on those and bought some tomatoes that maybe cost more than I would have preferred.

But you know what I didn't do? I didn't complain about the zucchinis' size. I didn't fuss about the melons' ripeness. I didn't criticize the tomatoes' price. Instead, I smiled at the lovely lady and made small talk as I paid and went about my day.

Why? Because I remember what it was like being out by the side of the road hot day after hot day. I know that we all poured everything we had into that produce. I remember how defeating it felt when some criticized it. I know that the price is probably around market value, even if it's cheaper in the grocery store. And I know that the farm family behind that cash register is giving everything they have to chase a dream.

I won't be the one to rain on their parade.
