Did you know that you can’t tell the difference between sugar derived from a GMO plant and sugar derived from a non-GMO plant?
That’s because sugar contains no DNA!
As Michael Ann Relka, an agronomist with Western Sugar Cooperative, explained: “[B]y extracting only a carbohydrate you are left with a product that contains no protein, no DNA, and therefore no GMO. No lab is able to determine the difference between sugar that came from a GMO plant and sugar that came from a non-GMO plant.”
Which makes it super weird that some activist organizations try to warn folks away from sugar derived from sugar beets. There’s no difference between the two, so the fact that it was derived from a GMO plant cannot possibly make a difference. It also shows how ridiculous it is that some companies, such as Hershey’s, have been switching away from GMO sugar beets as the source of their sugar. There is no such thing as GMO sugar!

This is interesting. But GMO won’t hurt you anyway. It is just one more thing for foodies to avoid. But no real reason to it.

Absolutely! I’m just pointing out how silly it is for customers to demand non-GMO sugar or labels on the sugar at all.
