Happy National Ag Day!
Today is a national day for us to celebrate agriculture in our country. From the food on our plates to the gas in our cars and the clothes on our backs, agriculture gives us so much to support our thoroughly modern lifestyles. For so many of us, food scarcity is not a problem. Instead of worrying about where our next meal will come from, we only have to worry about where we want our next meal to come from. The United States has one of the safest and cheapest food supplies in the world.
But while we celebrate such abundance today, we should also recognize that so many in rural America are struggling. Our communities are falling behind as the spoils of a strong economy seem to only happen in the cities. Almost on a daily basis now we hear about one farm or another going under and selling everything. The proud tradition of families farms unravels when the next generation has to leave and find other work.
The dichotomy is the reality that we face right now.
That being said, I have been so encouraged by all the people that have commented in support of the farmers struggling right now. Putting an extra gallon of milk in your cart, or choosing to not purchase certain labels makes me so happy. Will it make a difference? Maybe. Maybe not. But it doesn’t go unnoticed. So, thank you.
Despite anything else, let’s celebrate the abundance of agriculture and all that it gives us!
