Your favorite cereal characters will soon sport a familiar feature: the milk mustache! General Mills has partnered with the Milk Processors Education Program for limited edition cereal boxes featuring the got milk? campaign. The Trix, Lucky Charms, and Cheerios’ mascots will don the white mustache to encourage eaters to include milk in their morning meal.
“We believe in the power of cereal and milk to be an easy, affordable and delicious way to deliver the nutrients people need with the taste they love,” said Amy Cohn, senior nutrition manager at General Mills. “And for kids who eat cereal, 53 percent of their daily milk consumption comes from pouring cereal and milk together.”
The got milk? campaign is probably more familiar to those of us a little older. It originally launched in 1993 with the California Milk Producers Board. It was later licensed by MPEP and became nationally recognized. In 2014, MPEP retired the campaign and opted for a new marketing strategy.
As further incentive to shoppers, the cereal boxes will include $2 rebate coupons whenever cereal and milk is purchased together. You can learn more about and apply for the rebate here.
I’ve had my beefs with General Mills, but this is an excellent idea! Milk has so many essential nutrients and vitamins, making it an important part of anyone’s diet. Parents pairing it with cereal can find an easier way to get their kids to eat the healthy stuff. I’m hopeful it’ll also be a boon to our dairy farmers who are struggling financially right now.
