Attack of the Birds

Ah, there’s the corn growing tall and beautiful. The ears are filling out and getting thicker. Everything seems to be going well — even the weather is cooperating!

See? How pretty!
Wait a second… what …. the… heck… is … that….

Look a little closer…
Oh, it seems as though the birds have had a little taste.
Unfortunately, the birds are fans of corn. Worse in sweet corn because no one wants to eat after a bird (did you ever wonder why the grocery store sells corn cobs cut in half and all cleaned up?).
And there isn’t a whole lot you can do about birds these days. We aren’t supposed to shoot them. They get used to the shiny balloons in the field. And you cannot possibly place a cannon in every field. (A cannon is a loud gunshot-type sound that goes off every so often to scare the birds.)
But, the nice thing about the picture is that you can see the little kernels (mostly at the top) that haven’t been pecked to death. See how they’re starting to turn yellow and form?
One last thing, I wanted to take a photo of the “feet” on the corn. I just think it looks so cool/creepy!
