Farming Fridays!

What Does June Showers Make?

I don’t know how this summer has been for everyone else, but here it has been wet, wet, and more wet! We have had rain almost every day this past week (not to mention fog and mist). Not a whole lot of sunshine has been peaking through either.
The good news is the soybeans are growing and the field is starting to fill in with green!
They have definitely changed since two weeks ago, which was the last time I took pictures!

But not all the soybeans look quite as nice. In the back our farm we now have a lake. As mom says, we know have waterfront property. I joked that would only mean our property taxes were going up. However, this very situation is exactly why farmers have been eyeing the EPA’s proposed rule on wetlands.

As I explained in this post, the EPA proposed a rule that would broaden its definitions under the Clean Water Act to this:

“Functions of waters that might demonstrate a significant nexus includes sediment trapping, nutrient recycling, pollutant trapping and filtering, retention or attenuation of flood waters, runoff storage, export of organic matter, export of food resources, and provision of aquatic habitat. A hydrologic connection is not necessary to establish a significant nexus.”

So, that could mean that our field, which is usually dry and would be now except for the large amount of rain we’ve had, could be regulated by the EPA through the Clean Water Act. That may even require us to get permits before we do normal farming activities. Definitely not a situation we want to find ourselves in!

And that’s precisely why we’d like the EPA to #DitchtheRule.

This would seem to open the door to a lot of bureaucratic abuse in the future.
