To answer Monday’s question (Will We Have a Farm Bill This Week?), the answer is no.
If you haven’t already heard, it was defeated in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon.
The problem is, this makes if very, very hard to plan for the future when you have no idea what types of government programs you’re going to be dealing with.
For example, some of the amendments proposed would directly effect farmers. One amendment wanted to limit insurance subsidies to only $50,000. If you’re trying to figure out the amount of risk your farm can handle, that’s super important. Or, another wanted to tie stricter conservation methods to getting crop insurance. Again, we need to know that so we can implement the changes (if we don’t use them already) before we have to be in compliance.
The defeat is certainly a downer.
And not fair those those of us that depend on Congress getting their act together and passing a Farm Bill.
