Destruction of Michigan’s Fruit Crop and the Consequences

June 1, 2012

The video does a nice job summing up the extent of the damage, as well as explaining how the crop loss will effect everyone in the production chain, the community, and even the local schools.

Today, Governor Snyder has official requested federal assistance from the USDA for the losses. In the press release, Snyder explained:

“Our farming community members are looking at large crop losses – currently estimated at $223.5 million. Michigan’s food and agriculture producers have a substantial impact on the economy and it is important those farmers have access to additional resources, such as low-interest loans,” said Snyder.  “We will be working closely with our state and federal partners to provide assistance to Michigan’s farmers, food processors, and fresh market producers to help keep their businesses moving forward during this difficult time.”

Over the last couple weeks, various Michigan Congressmen have met with local farmers and toured the areas that were worst hit. Hopefully, the federal government will respond with assistance and help out Michigan farmers who are facing a very difficult year.
