Appeal to Nature Fallacy

April 17, 2017

The appeal to nature is the idea that everything that is “natural” is good, while everything that is “unnatural” is bad. Unfortunately, this could not be farther from the truth, and the truth tends to be a lot more black and white. Just because a chemical was artificially created in a lab does not mean that it is bad. Just because a chemical occurs naturally does not mean it is good. Consider that apples naturally produce their own arsenic. While you’re probably not going to consume enough apples for it to harm you, consuming arsenic is usually not a good thing. Remember, in nature, all plants and animals have special means of defending themselves from predators. If they didn’t, they would probably go extinct.
