As an agronomist, I think the most simple way of describing sustainable agriculture is, farms / fields, that are still productive after several generations of use. Modern day agricultural techniques, such as soil analysis, application of fertilizer according to crop needs, reduced tillage, use of low compaction implements, cover crops, have all contributed to improved soil.
Urbanization is the one most destructive force that I can think of.
