Just in time for Thanksgiving, I am doing a free giveaway of a book written and published by Katie Olthoff at On the Banks of Squaw Creek. Along with her husband and children, Katie is a turkey farmer and also does a nice job of sharing her family’s farm on her website.
I am excited to share Katie’s book, because I feel like it fits in with my goal of educating consumers and promoting agriculture. No doubt teaching our children about farming while they are young is a good idea!
I’ve read “My Family’s Farm” and I love that it caters to children, but also has plenty of interesting facts about turkey farming for adults too. My family does not raise any animals (aside from dogs and cats), so even I was able to learn a little bit from the book.
A note from Katie:
My Family’s Farm has been a dream of mine for over two years, since I realized that there are very few children’s books showing today’s livestock farms. Farms have changed over the past 50 years, but their portrayal has not. This book is an effort to change that.
The book is meant to appeal to a broad age range. The text at the top of each page, from 6-year-old Adam’s perspective, is for younger children, while the in-depth information at the bottom of each page is directed at older students and adults.
You can also preview the book here.
The book is available online and there are opportunities for educators to get a printed copy. But, one lucky reader of The Farmer’s Daughter USA will end up with a print copy of the book!
All you have to do is sign up below and visit both my Facebook page and On the Banks of Squaw Creek and you’ll be entered for the drawing!
Entries start Monday at 12:00am and end Wednesday night at 11:59pm. I will announce the winner on my Farming Fridays! post this week! Good luck!
