Scare tactics.ย
This is just another attack on conventional farming by niche farms and environmental groups. No surprise it came out of California, which is constantly bringing up these anti-farming ballot proposals.
Labels imply something is wrong with the food. There isn’t. There is no proof that genetically modified foods are bad, harmful, or unhealthy. Since when did we become so adverse to science? For some reason people have just decided that anything scientifically advanced is dangerous or bad (think vaccines). Maybe it’s a result of our over technically advanced world, or simply because so many people don’t understand the world around them and it scares them.
Farmers have been genetically modifying foods since we first start cultivating crops. In fact, Mendel’s experiments on modifying food is precisely how we first learned so much about genetics. At least today we know exactly how our foods are being modified.
Is this organic farmer going to put labels on all of his food as well?
(By the way, I’m pretty sure this type of labeling requirement would violate the Commerce Clause, but California is known for that one too.)
