Following the House of Representatives passage of the Farm Bill last week, the Senate voted today to pass the Farm Bill.
The bill passed 68-32. The final version of the bill cuts about $800 million a year from food stamps, out of an $80 billion a year program. It also ends direct payments and strengthens the crop insurance program.
The controversial, yet important, King Amendment did not make the final cut for the Farm Bill.
The legislation will now head to the president’s desk. President Obama plans to sign the Farm Bill at Michigan State University (Go Green!), which is the alma mater of myself and Ag Committee Chair and Senator Debbie Stabenow, on Friday.
