AskTFD: Seed Delivery

July 27, 2015

What month typically does a farmer receive their seed once ordered?

-Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for the question!

We actually purchase our seed in September or October to plant the following spring. It is then usually delivered in March.

If you would like to learn more about the process of how we choose the seed we’re going to buy and negotiate with our seed dealer, be sure to check out my article on Genetic Literacy Project.

Of course, things sometimes come up during planting and we end up needing additional seed. Depending on how much we need, we contact our seed dealer and request more seed. If we’re only asking for a couple bags of corn, for example, the dealer probably has it in stock and we can pick it up right away. If we’re looking for a larger quantity, perhaps a couple pallets of corn seed, we would still call our dealer, but it may take a couple days for him to get it.

Thanks again for the question!

Amanda
