This past week I had a port placed. This will help nurses easily hook me up for chemotherapy treatment. I was SO nervous about getting the port!! But it really isn’t that bad. I’m happy to say I’m on the other side and doing well.

My wife had a port and 15 days of chemo a little over a year ago and the only problem with port was that the line did plug once but they overcame that. One hint that I wanted to pass on is the ointment that they prescribe as a local pain killer before the port infusion. Be sure and use it as directed. A perfect way to protect the area is to apply the ointment an hour or so ahead of time and cover it with a clean sanitized milk jug cap and a piece of tape to hold it in place. Save the cap for next time. It works great. How many days of chemo will you have. Depending on the drug you will probably loose your hair but if it works that is no big deal long term. My wife lost her hair after the first 3 day series, just be emotionally ready for what may happen. Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Great tip! I already have the cream ordered to pick up tomorrow. I’ll have chemo once every three weeks. I will likely lose my hair, which is freaking me out a little bit. But I know it will come back and I have way too much to live for to worry about that!
